SEMESTER TWO ERWC 12-English Reading Writing Course Mrs. Flores

Please go back to the original course outline if you need further (in depth) clarification on rules/class procedures/grading procedures. For the new semester here is an outline (not necessarily in any order) from now until the end of the school year.

1.Bring a Text to Class: How can students learn by helping is read texts that they like? 2.Language, Gender, and Culture: How do gender and culture affect what we sat and how we say it? 3.The Politics of Food: How might out food choices make a political statement? A moral one?

4.Justice: Childhood Love lessons: How can parents discipline with love and justice? What happens if parents do not? 5.Bullying at School (Research Project): How can students create and present a school Code of Conduct that deals with bullying?

6. Krakauer, Jon. Into the Wild. New York: Doubleday, This non-fiction, full-length work, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, was published in Engaging students in this biography/story, based on Krakauer’s investigation of Christopher McCandless, a young idealistic college graduate, allows them to think deeply about human motivation and perhaps begin to understand something of the complexity of maturity. Excerpted in the book, students experience a taste of the works of the American Transcendentalists and Russian novelists, which so influenced McCandless’ life philosophy. Students conclude the assignment by writing a text-based academic essay on one of a number of themes from the work. Students are expected to write an essay of 1,500-2,500 words.

7.An Outside reading novel. The testing window is: May 26, 27 & 28. (If you are absent on the date you sign up, no book talk. Please switch with someone in the class if you for see this as a problem. We will be going to the library for a brief check-out and if necessary, you may renew a book that you currently have from there.

Here are a few reminders (just in case you have forgotten) NO GUM/hats/ear buds/phones/Ipods (or any other electric devices that I failed to mention. If we are working on an assignment and either I offer you to use your phones or you ask me, then okay.

No squiggles. This means that you are to use a composition book for your activities, writing assignments, scratch paper, etc. (If you are still using a binder, then okay, as long as the paper is loose leaf.) Tardy? = 1 lunch detention (this will be strongly enforced)

All work after the second day is 50% (First day late 20%) You do NOT get extra time for extra-curricular activities. You must take a test/quiz/turn in an assignment BEFORE the activity. If you are ill (and it is excused) you may submit make- up work on the day after you return to class. Unexcused absences DO NOT warrant extra time. Sorry.

THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN LATE WORK FOR THIS CLASS IS MAY 26 TH, PERIOD!!!! Don’t ask. This date is given to you now so that you are completely aware of the expectations of this class second semester. Make-up tests are before school ONLY Monday- Friday between 6:45-7:30am- Please adjust your schedule to meet that time frame.

There will be some great articles (Modules) to read and discuss, along with in-class essays and typed essays outside of class. One project will be required towards the end of the school-year. We will also host at least one more Socratic Seminar. You will also be responsible for your outside reading novel as well as any other novel that we will be reading as part of the ERWC requirements.

As always, I am here for you either by or a personal conference; however, it is up to YOU whether you make this happen. Failure to conference with me before the deadline dates, may result in a failing a grade and the risk of NOT walking at graduation. Good Luck! Mrs. Flores

These goals may be about this class, other classes, or personal goals that do not relate to your grades. As long as you write enough to warrant your personal expectations of what you want to accomplish by June of 2015.
