This book engages the students in English learning through various activities, so it requires the teacher to carefully design tasks and the students should take a more active attitude towards English learning. 1.Analyzing the material The topic of unit 16 is America. This unit serves as a good means to cultivate the students ’ inter-culture communicative awareness, and to enrich their knowledge. The reading passage The American South uses Atlanta, Georgia as an example to describe the history and development of the American South.

2. Analyzing the students Based on the one and a half year of senior English study, the students have adapted themselves to English learning through various activities, and they have acquired some independent and cooperative learning abilities. Therefore, the students won ’ t have much difficulty engaging in the tasks designed here.

Teaching Aims 1.Knowledge objective Enlarge the students’ knowledge about America, especially the history and development of the American South. 2.Language skills ① Improve the students’ speaking, reading and writing abilities ② Train the students’ communicative and cooperative abilities through different tasks. 3.Cultural awareness Cultivate the students’ inter-culture communicative awareness. 4.Moral objective ① Make the students explore the spirits of the people in South America: bravery, diligence and strong- will ; and make them learn from the people in South America. ② Make them think about the spirits of people in Jinjiang, then encourage them to carry forward such spirits.

Questions come to mind: 1.How did the South overcome all these difficulties? 2.How could Atlanta become the host of the Olympics?

1. Read the text quickly, divide the text into several parts and find the main idea for each part. The students are given two chances and 10 points for each. (Individual work, 5 minutes) While-task Part 1: ( Para 1 ) The American South has a troubled past. Part 2: ( Para 2-5 ) The quick development of the South after the Civil War. Part 3: ( Para 6 ) Despite many problems to deal with,the South has a bright future.

2.Read the text carefully again, try to find the new words in the text, guess the meaning of the new words and write down the words closest in meaning. (Individual work, 7 minutes ). While-task

3.Match the examples with the statements they support or illustrate. (Individual work, 5 minutes ) StatementsExamples 1. The people of Atlanta rebuilt the city almost from nothing A. 4.Chain game to summarize Give the students 5 minutes to write down the summary of the text. Then the whole class cooperates to make a report of the summary. Anyone who volunteers will earn ten points for his group. (Individual and class work, 10 minutes )

Post-task 1 Discussion, ten points for each question. ( Pair work, 5 minutes ) ① What were the difficulties the people of Atlanta had to overcome after the Civil War? ② Try to use one proverb to describe the spirits of the people of South America. (Where there is a will, there is a way.) ③ What can we learn from the people of South America ? ④ Do you think the people in Jinjiang have such spirits? Is it necessary for our generation to carry forward such spirits?.
