Update to the USDA ARS Aerial Spray Nozzle Models Brad Fritz, Clint Hoffmann, Phil Jank USDA ARS Aerial Application Technology Research Group College Station, Texas

Why Update the Models? Updated Measurement System –Sympatec instead of PMS New High Speed Wind tunnel –Speed increased 160 mph → 180+ mph Increased operational ranges –Pressure – 60 → 90 psi –Airspeed – 160 → 180 mph –Orientation angle – 20° → 45° (SS nozzles) CP11TT with FF tips not included in the current models Current models → Spraying System FFs

Nozzles and Settings Nozzles Included: –CP11TT 20, 40 and 80 ° FF –CP03 and CP09 –Steel and Ceramic Disc Core 45 –Standard Spraying Systems 40 and 80 ° FF –CP11TT Straight Stream –Disc Core Straight Stream –Davidon TriSet

Nozzles and Settings in New Models Only Fixed-Wing updated this year –Rotary-Wing models – end of 2015 Excel Interface Updated –All nozzles in single Excel File Smartphone apps being updated. –High / Low Speed vs Fixed / Rotary Wing Low Speed < 120 mph High Speed >120 mph –New “Choose Solution”

New Model Format

Understanding Each Nozzle Each nozzle can be operated at a large number of unique combinations of: –Orifice Size –Pressure –Orientation Angle –Airspeed Where do you start?

COARSE MEDIUM FINE Orifice #15 Deflection Angle 0° Pressure Airspeed

COARSE MEDIUM FINE #12 15° #15 0°

COARSER Airspeed Orifice Deflection Angle Pressure FINER COARSER
