OBJECTIVES  Review Schubert  Finish Schubert  Begin Wagner  Group Presentation Time (15 Min)  Happy Friday!

SCHUBERT REVIEW  What were the years of Schubert? Where was Schubert born?  What were his main instruments? Who were his first two teachers?  What was the name of the school he studied at? Who was his teacher there?  How many song cycles did Schubert write? What were his two major ones?  What style of writing was Schubert most known for? How many pieces total did he compose?  

MIDDLE YEARS  In 1815, Schubert has his most significant compositional output, over 140 pieces written and one Mass  In 1818, Schubert spends the Summer with the family of Count Johann Karl Esterhazy (hmmm)  Der Erlkönig epitomizes the Romantic ideal by using voice changes to represent the three different characters: Father, Son and Erlkönig. Piano represents the galloping horse   Des Fischers Liebesglück, The Fisher’s Joy in Love, captures the essence of joy and sadness all at once while the piano creates the stirring waves of the lake 

LATE YEARS OF SCHUBERT  In 1824, Schuberts mentor and teacher Antonio Salieri retires from his post of Kapellmeister and Schubert applies for the position  He is denied the position and thus begins a “spiraling” cycle in his life  During this time period, ( ) Schubert produced some of his most memorable music  Standchen (serenade)     String Quartet in G major   Symphony No. 8 (unfinished)   Symphony No. 9 (Great C)   Ave Maria 

RICHARD WAGNER  Born in 1813 in Leipzig  Died in 1883 of a heart attack in Venice  He never knew his father (died 6 months after Wagner’s birth)  Was raised by his Mother Joahnna and his Father’s friend, Ludwig Geyer  Geyer was a local actor and playwright and introduced Wagner to music at an early age. Geyer eventually would allow Wagner to act in his plays and exposed Wagner to many of the theatrics of shows.  In 1820 (age 7) Wagner began taking piano lessons at the Possendorf school with his Latin teacher  Wagner was initially not very good at scales, but could play musicals back by ear

WAGNER CONTINUED  In 1821, Geyer passes away and Wagner is sent to the Kreuzschule which was a Dresden Choir School (Dresdner Kreuzchor).  In the same year, he sees the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Weber and this heavily influences him at a very young age.  In 1826, Wagner composes his first opera WWV 1, (Wagner-Werk-Verzichnis) Leubald. It was heavily influenced by Shakespeare and Goethe and he set it to music in the following years.  In 1827, he returns to Leipzig to have harmony lessons ( ) where he studied with Christian Gottleib Müller.  In the same year, Wagner hears Beethoven’s Symphony 7 and 9 and is highly influenced enough to the point that he writes out an entire piano transcription Symphony 9.

BRIEF WORKS BY WAGNER  Ride of the Valkyries   Overture to Rienzi 
