Ionic Compounds Metal + Non-metal Examples: NaCl, KF, Cu 2 O, Mg(NO 3 ) 2, NaCH 3 COO, NH 4 Br Metal always has a (+) charge = cation Non-metal has a (-) charge = anion Sometimes polyatomic ions substitute for either metal or non-metal. If polyatomic is (+), like NH 4 +, it subs for the metal If it is (-), like NO 3 - or OH -, it subs for the non-metal

Naming binary ionic cmpds Compounds made of 2 elements only. If Metal has only one oxidation state (charge) – Look up metal’s charge on PT _______________________________________________ 1. Name the cation (metal) based on element name. 2. Drop the ending of the name of the anion (non- metal), add ‘ide’. Ex: SrI 2 = strontium iodide Ag 3 N = silver nitride ZnO = zinc oxide Ba 3 P 2 = barium phosphide

Naming binary ionic cmpds Metal has more than one oxidation state Look up metal’s charges on PT Determine which charge is the correct one by figuring out the total negative charge from the anion Ex: AuCl 3 : Au can be +1 or +3 PT shows that each Cl is - 1 and there are 3 of them -1 x 3= -3 charge total from Cl -1 so since the charges in AuCl 3 must add to = 0, and there is one Au ion present, the Au must be +3 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Name the cation (metal) based on element name. 2. After metal name, use ROMAN NUMERAL to note the oxidation state of the METAL. 3. Drop the ending of the name of the anion (non-metal), add ‘ide’. Therefore, AuCl 3 = gold (III) chloride

More examples… FeBr 2 Br has a -1 charge (on PT). There are two Br -1 ions in this compound. 2 x -1 = total negative charge of -2. This means Fe must be Fe +2. The name of FeBr 2 is iron (II) bromide. Mn 2 O 7 O has a -2 charge (on PT). There are 7 O -2 ions in this compound. 7 x -2 = total negative charge of -14. Two Mn ions together must have a charge of /2 = +7 on each Mn ion. The name of Mn 2 O 7 is manganese (VII) oxide.

Naming ionic compounds Ionic compounds with polyatomic ions Polyatomic ions = Ions made of more than one atom. These ions behave as if they are one charged atom. Look up names of ions in Table E of reference tables. _________________________________________________ If polyatomic is positive (the cation), name the ion, then drop ending of anion, add ‘ide. Ex: (NH 4 ) 2 O = ammonium oxide If polyatomic is negative (the anion), name the metal, then name the polyatomic ion. Ex: NaOH = sodium hydroxide Ex: Ti(NO 3 ) 3 = titanium (III) nitrate

More examples… K 3 PO 4 CaSO 4 Zn(NO 2 ) 2 Co(ClO 3 ) 2 Potassium phosphate Calcium sulfate Zinc nitrite Cobalt (II) chlorate

Molecular Compounds Made of only non-metals. Examples: H 2 O, CO 2, N 2 O, also : C 6 H 12 O 6, C 2 H 5 OH Naming binary molecular compounds: Name the elements, and use GREEK prefixes to tell what the subscripts are. If the first element has a subscript of 1, use no prefix – The subscript is understood in the name. Ex: CO 2 = carbon dioxide CH4 = carbon tetrahydride N 2 O = dinitrogen monoxide N 2 O 4 = dinitrogen tetroxide

Greek Prefixes: 1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta 6 = hexa 7 = hepta 8 = octa 9 = nona 10 = deca If the name of the element begins with a vowel, drop the ‘a’ or ‘o’ ending of the above prefixes. Ex: tetraoxide becomes tetroxide, heptaiodide becomes heptiodide

Examples of Molecular Cmpds Name these: PH 3 SiC P 2 O 3 SiO 2 Se 3 P 4 BrF 3 SI 6 Phosphorus trihydride Silicon monocarbide Diphosphorus trioxide Silicon dioxide Triselenium tetraphosphide Bromine trifluoride Sulfur hexiodide What is the systematic name of water?? H2OH2O
