Claim (1 claim statement) Reasons to support claim (opinion statements) Facts to support the author’s reasons Suggestions (which are also opinion – oriented)

“Universal physical education is a start, and it’s a shame that schools have been cutting back on recess and gym. […] we need diet to be part of the equation.” In your own words, what is the topic of the essay? What is the opinion of the author on the topic?

Supporting Reason: 1. “Not only are children eating this unhealthy food, they are digesting the values that go with it ….” (until the last sentence in the paragraph)

Supporting Reason: 2. “We can try to improve diets all we want by making school lunches more nutritious and by getting vending machines out of the hallways, but that only gets us partway there.” (Opposing Vpt.)

Supporting Reason: 3. In order for kids to eat healthy, they should do the work themselves. Then they’ll want to taste/experience their efforts.

1. “It’s time for students to start getting credit for eating a good lunch.”

2. “Schools should not just serve foot; they should teach it… “ (entire paragraph)

3. “As a nation we need to take back responsibility for the health of not just our children, but also our culture.”

4. “We need a revolution…” (entire paragraph)

Read the article entitled “Eating for Credit.” Using the terms you learned from the notes, label the following parts of the editorial: Claim Statement (the article’s position) Reasons Facts Suggestions ** Use 4 different colored pencils. Make sure to create a key so I know which color is which.
