Group 11 - Team 5 The Bigger Picture Presentation 28 th November 2014

Is our knowledge of the senses being used in the most ethically sound application?

We have looked at a lot of research into multisensory design and its current applications. We have found that, for the most part, our knowledge is used primarily in order to manipulate and influence people with the aim of selling a particular product This brings ethics into question and whether we should be doing more to use senses for good Its not all bad though, multisensory experiences are used in treatment of mental health patients, but this is very limited and private. Our app aims to change this, and to an extent to begin to repurpose a lot of existing spaces like McDonalds away from the more consumerism-driven environment.

Safe space is a free app for all mobile devices, with an aim of locating nearby ‘safe spaces’ A safe space could be any kind of space which has the potential to make someone feel safe in a familiar environment Our app will use a simple slider-based search function where a user will specify their needs for example preferred noise levels and busyness levels and will tailor a list of nearby places to the users search This will include both independent spaces and chains, and covers everything from museums to cafes to libraries and bookstores
