Antipsychotic medications  Used to calm psychotic patients (schizophrenics)  D2 antagonists  Dopamine blockers  Reduce positive symptoms  Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)  Clozapine (Clorazil)  Problem- tardive dyskinesia  v=t_NKRS8lLWA v=t_NKRS8lLWA  Other side effects: sluggishness, tremors, twitches

Antianxiety meds  Depress central nervous system activity  Should be used with psychotherapy  Xanax  Valium  Ativan  All GABA agonists  Criticism:  Masks the problem, not a solution

Antidepressants  SSRIs: Selective-Serotonin-Reuptake- Inhibitors  Partially block the reabsorption of serotonin  Elevates arousal and mood  Dual-Action Antidepressants  Work by blocking the reabsorption of norepinephrine and serotonin.  Side effects: dry mouth, weight gain, hypertension, or dizzy spells.  For depression, drug therapy is most effective when paired with psychotherapy  These also work for OCD and anxiety  SSRIs  Prozac  Zoloft  Paxil

Mood Stabilizers  Lithium- bipolar  Depakote-bipolar (but originally for seizures)  Signs of mild to moderate lithium toxicity:  Mild shakiness, especially in the hands  Thirst  Increased or frequent urination  Diarrhea  Vomiting  Drowsiness  Muscle weakness  Coordination problems  Signs of more severe toxicity include:  Giddiness  Blurred vision  Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)  Severe shakiness  Seizures  Depakote

Brain Stimulation  Using electricity to shock the brain, thereby calming the neural centers where overactivity produces depression  Patient is anesthetized (unconscious)  Given a muscle relaxant  Their brain is shocked with about 100 volts  Effective for severe depression that hasn’t been responsive to medication  ECT  Electroconvulsive therapy  rTMS  Magnetic stimulation  Side effects: memory loss
