Essential question: How do I describe things in Spanish?
In Spanish, nouns have gender ◦ Masculine – refers to a guy or ends in –o ◦ Feminine – refers to a girl or ends in –a To say “the” in Spanish, use the words “el” (masculine) or “la” (feminine) To say “a” or “an” in Spanish, use the words “un” (masculine) or “una” (feminine)
Adjectives are words that describe nouns. In Spanish, there are two big differences with how adjectives work ◦ Placement ◦ Agreement
Placement: ◦ In English, we put adjectives before the noun. An honest student ◦ In Spanish, adjectives go AFTER the noun. Un alumno honesto ◦ They can also go after the verb. El muchacho es honesto. (The boy is honest) La muchacha es honesta. (The girl is honest)
Agreement: In Spanish, adjectives have to agree, meaning that it has to match the gender of the noun. ◦ If a noun is masculine, use the masculine form of the adjective (use an –o ending) ◦ If the noun is feminine, use the feminine form of the adjective (use an –a ending) Un muchacho tímido Una muchacha tímida
