Presentation transcript:

Hindi 1a - lesson 5b आपको मालूम है कि रवि कहाँ है? Do you know where Ravi is?

आपको ‘रानी मुखर्जी’ पसंद है? Which film star do you really like? Pick one. Go round the class seeing if you can find others that also like that film star. Scribble down a list of the stars people like. Then we will discover who found out the most star’s names. (They don’t have to be bollywood)

मालूम है / पता है ‘to know’ मालूम है and पता है mean ‘to know some information’ (पता है is more informal) the information is known ‘to’ the knower and follows the word कि which means ‘that’ (NB not interchangable with वह ‘that’) person + को मालूम है + कि + information For instance: मुझको मालूम है कि वह यहाँ नही है ‘I know that he is not here.’

मालूम नहीं ‘don’t know’ To say that somebody does not know something add नहीं after मालूम or पता The है is often dropped in ‘don’t know’ For instance: रवि को मालूम नहीं कि आज रानी मुखर्जी एनयूएस में है। ‘Ravi does not know that Rani Mukherjee is in NUS today.’

डॉन में कौन है? Who is in ‘Don’? Work in groups of five. All pick a film (can be not Bollywood). Then each asks the others if they know who is in it on this model: क्या आपको मालूम है कि डॉन में कौन है? Do you know who is in ‘Don’? At the end we will share each groups knowledge about the starts in one film हमको मालूम है कि डॉन में अमिताभ, ज़ीनत अमान..

ठीक है, है न? ‘That’s right, isn’t it?’ Add है न after a statement to turn it into a tag question, a kind of question that is trying to get the person to confirm that the statement is true. उसको पता नहीं कि आज वह यहाँ है, है न? ‘S/He does not know that s/he is here today, does s/he?’ its more complicated in English than Hindi!

काफ़ी ‘fairly’, ‘enough’ काफ़ी before adjectives tends to mean ‘fairly’ it qualifies degree. आज मौसम काफ़ी गरम है। Today the weather is fairly hot. काफ़ी before nouns tends to mean ‘enough’ it qualifies quantity. आज मेरे पास काफ़ी पैसा नहीं है। Today I don’t have enough money.

कैसा ‘what sort/kind of’ or ‘how’ कैसा can mean ‘what sort/kind of’ it is a type of adjective and changes form The context suggests the type of answer यह कैसी क़लम है? (काली / लाल etc.) What sort of a pen is this? (black/red) वै कैसे समोसे हैं? (शाकाहारी / माँसाहारी) What sort of samosas are those? वह कैसा अख़बार है? (अच्छा / ख़राब) What sort of a paper is that? (Good/bad)

वह कैसी फ़िल्म है? How is that film? In pairs create a dialogue between a film star and an interviewer. The dialogue must include forms from today, i.e: क्या आपको मालूम था कि... Did you know that… वह कैसी फ़िल्म थी... How was that film? काफ़ी अच्छी थी, है न? It was fairly good, wasn’t it? Then we will hear some of the interviews…
