Chapter 16: The Transformation of American Society ( ) Section 3: Daily Life in the Cities What’s to do for fun around here?

Education Cities are growing very quickly, and urban life is difficult. What kind of job are you likely to have if you don’t finish school (or if you’ve never been to school at all)?

Illiteracy Rates in the U.S.

Publishing Now that more people can read, more people can buy newspapers and other publications. Can you believe everything that you read in the newspaper?

Leisure Time in Urban Parks Sometimes you just need to get away from it all. It’s well-known that people with access to “happy trees” to look at are often in a better mood.

Leisure and Sports **Name that Sport** This sport was invented in 1891 and relied upon peach baskets. It was invented by a physical education teacher as an athletic distraction for a “rowdy class” he had through the brutal New England winter.

Leisure and Sports **Name that Sport** Many objected to the violence of this sport. There were 64 reported player deaths in the 1905 season. Rule changes were made.

Leisure and Sports **Name that Sport** This sport became a “national pastime” after the Civil War. In the 1800’s, the first professional team – the Cincinnati Red Stockings – paid the first professional players.

Entertainment Let’s pretend – heaven forbid – that television does not exist. What would be the centerpiece of your family’s home back in the late 1800’s?

Entertainment For many, it was the piano. One popular new form of music was called ragtime. This early jazz form will be a big hit among the youngsters.
