Referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union Thursday 23 June 2016

What is a referendum? A referendum is basically a vote in which everyone of voting age can take part, normally giving a "Yes" or "No" answer to a question. Whichever side gets more than half of all votes cast is considered to have won. The question is "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" This time the answers are either “REMAIN” or “LEAVE” The vote is on Thursday 23 rd of June

The Remain Campaign - video

ISSUE 1 – IMMIGRATION The number of the people in Scotland has gone up and is planned to keep going up. The Scottish Government wants more people to come to Scotland as otherwise the population would fall and there would be fewer people working in Scotland. The REMAIN people say immigration from the rest of the EU has been good for Britain's economy with lots more jobs created. The LEAVE people say if we left the EU then there might be less people from other countries in Europe come to live in Britain as they would no longer have a right to come and work where they want.

On This Question I Agree With A.The Remain Campaign B.The Leave Campaign C.Neither

ISSUE 2 - JOBS Britain buys and sells things with many places in the world. Less than half of the things we sell are to the EU. More than half of what we buy comes from the EU. People in Britain have jobs both buying and selling things from other countries. The REMAIN people say if we remain in the EU then we will still trade with all the member countries. But if we leave some jobs might be lost if big companies moved to other EU countries in the future. The LEAVE people say Britain would be free to make stronger trade deals with other nations including those in Europe. There would be lots more jobs as firms are freed from EU regulations and red tape.

On This Question I Agree With A.The Remain Campaign B.The Leave Campaign C.Neither

ISSUE 3 - CRIME Recorded crime has fallen for the eighth year in a row in Scotland and is now at its lowest level for 41 years, violent crime is down 6% and crimes of handling an offensive weapon (including knives) have reduced by 67% since There are over 1,000 extra police officers since 2007 to protect the public and keeping communities safe. The REMAIN people say crime fighting is easier if we stay in the EU. The European Arrest Warrant makes it easier for criminals to be brought to justice across the EU. The LEAVE people say free movement in the EU makes it impossible to turn back criminals at the border. They have a list of 50 crimes carried out by people from other EU countries who could have been stopped if Britain didn’t have to let them in.

On This Question I Agree With A.The Remain Campaign B.The Leave Campaign C.Neither

ISSUE 4 - DEMOCRACY The REMAIN people say the European Union is democratic. We elect Members of the European Parliament. Each government picks their own people to be on the European Commission. Really important decisions are made by all the Prime Ministers getting together The LEAVE people say the European Union is undemocratic because all EU laws are proposed by the European Commission which meets in secret. This commission is not elected but can make regulations that must be followed by all members.
