Introduction to TechSoup Participant Polls – Held hostage? – How often do you update? Zero Cost Checklist Lifecycle of a Website Options for New and Updating Existing Bill of Rights & Next Steps Q&A Today’s Agenda:

TechSoup is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a clear focus: connecting fellow nonprofits, charities, public libraries, and foundations with tech products and services, plus learning resources to make informed decisions about technology. Who Is TechSoup?

Since 1987, TechSoup donation programs have served more than 210,000 charitable organizations. We’ve distributed more than 11 million software and hardware donations and enabled recipients to save more than US$3.75 billion in IT expenses in 60+ countries around the world. We reach more than 400,000 nonprofit, library, and philanthropy subscribers in the United States with our newsletters each year.

Are you able to update your website content on a regular basis? – Daily – Weekly – Monthly – Yearly – Never Participant Poll

When is the last time your org went through a web design/redesign project? – Less than a year – 1-2 years – 3-5 – 5+ – Never? – We don’t have a website yet Participant Poll

September, Are you Being Held Hostage by Your Website?

How did you come up with the name for this webinar? Are you held hostage by your website? How did you ome up with the idea and name for this webinar?

What are common signs that a nonprofit is being handcuffed by their website? Common Signs Content is stale Design is dated No longer tells your story Doesn’t support organization needs

If an organization can’t do all of the things on the checklist what happens to their site?

How do I know if my organization is being limited by our site? Can You Check All These Boxes?

Can you recap the top reason an organization loses control of their site?

If a nonprofit is handcuffed by their website, is there anything they can do? – Are they stuck? What is the solution? Popular Website Builder or CMS

Are you saying they have to throw out their current site and start from scratch? What is the solution? Popular Website Builder of CMS

Websites should have a lifecycle Website Revamp Every 1 – 5 Years

How much extra time will this add to a website refresh? What is the solution? Popular Website Builder of CMS

Why a Website Builder? Your Staff/Volunteer Your Website

Why a “Popular” Website Builder? More people know it = more help for you

Seems like a no brainer, Aren’t all sites built with a website builder? Percent of Websites Powered by a Builder

Ok, so what are some popular website builders?

Which is the most popular? Market Share of Popular Website Builders

Do they all do the same thing? Features/Learning/ Maintenance

How do I know if my website uses a builder? Some helpful links: Or Google “what cms is this”

If my site uses a builder, how do I get my content updated? Find a volunteer trainer …

If my website is not using a CMS, is it possible to convert to a CMS?

How can you avoid being held hostage? Your Rights Own your site Maintain your site Own your code Protect your site For Future Website Projects

What do you mean by “own” your site? Doesn’t everyone?

I did not know there was code. What do you mean “own your code”? Own Your Code Put in writing that you own the code for the site

What specific things should my staff be able to do to our website? Maintain Your Content

You mentioned protecting your site. That sounds complicated. Is it? See proof that your site is backed up on a regular schedule Verify that you have access to the backup files Protect Your Site

I thought by “protect” you were going to tell us how to prevent hackers and spam If Your Site Gets Hacked Critical Reason for Backups

Website Checklist - What Do I Do Now? 1.Find out what your site is built with. 2.Find out who owns your domain name and hosting? 3.If you are not on a reputable host, get one today. 4.Look at your contract with the developer, do you own your own code? 5.Confirm your backups. When is your most recent backup? How often are they scheduled. 6.Review/complete the “Zero Cost checklist” 7.Identify a staff person that is a good candidate for website training.

What If I Am Confused? Words like domain, hosting, CMS are confusing… Can I get help?
