MOST SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FORM IN
Rock Color The color of a sedimentary rock will be determined by the cementing material and sediment composition Red Sandstone – means the rock has iron in it that has been exposed to air (rusting).
Stratification-layers of sediments deposits over extended periods of time
Sedimentary Veneer Even though most of the crust is composed of Igneous rock the Earth’s surface is covered by a veneer (thin layer) of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks form a veneer on the earths surface because as igneous rocks are uplifted to the surface and exposed to air and water they are weathered and broken into sediments that become cemented and compacted into sedimentary rocks.

How are Sedimentary Rocks Formed? Sediments become buried, compacted, and cemented together to create a rock. sedimentary formation sedimentary formation 2
Sedimentary Rocks are Classified into 3 separate categories based on how they formed Clastic Chemical / Crystalline Bioclastic / Organic
Clastic – fragmental sedimentary rocks Sorted and classified by Grain size. Conglomerate – the clastic rock that has the widest range of grain sizes (pebbles to clay) Reference Table and clastic rock pics
Chemical Rocks Have compacted crystals (not intergrown, this would be igneous) MONOMINERALIC – made of ONE mineral Chemical rocks and the esrt and pics
Bioclastic / Organic- Made from the remains of living material organic rocks and ESRT Limestone: Shells Coal: plant remains
Sediments- fragments of rock particles PEBBLES SAND CLAY SILT
