ROCKS!. Rocks There are 3 rock types: - Sedimentary - Igneous - Metamorphic -All 3 types can be found in Canada.
Metamorphic Rocks  A rock that is subjected to heat and pressure.  They may be formed simply by being deep beneath the Earth's surface.  Being formed.
Rock Types And Classifications. Igneous Igneous rocks are fire formed They originate from the magma in the mantle of the Earth. Extrusive igneous rocks.

Unit 7 Rocks Rocks. 1.What are rocks?1. Rocks are a mixture of minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural material. 2.
Did you know the Earth is a giant rock? Minerals are nonliving, solid substances They occur naturally - they are not made by people Minerals have.
Classification of Rocks. 1. How do the crystals or minerals form in a rock? 2. Why do some rocks have layers? 3. Why do some rocks have rounded particles.
Unit 17 STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH. What are the different types of rocks? IGNEOUS ROCKS formed from molten rocks (magma) that flow to the Earth’s surface.

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle What are the similarities and differences between these rocks? Challenge: Why are they different or similar? Super challenge: Justify your answer

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle Learning Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Learning Benefit: Model the processes that are responsible for rock formation and link these to the rock features.

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle Rock tests You have some different rocks to test, Water test Scratchy test Magnifying test Using the information around the room, and your test results, decide on what type of rock you have. Challenge: Justify your comments with reasoning and evidence

Give reasons for your answer

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle “Sandstone is the best type of rock for building a house out of” Using evidence, suggest why this statement is wrong. Bullet point ideas Facts Evidence Better suggestions Put into full sentences Challenge: How could you improve your answer?

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle Properties of metamorphic rocks Metamorphic type examples description usually harder than sedimentary rocks containing thin layers and twisted fossils Marble and slate

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle Properties of Sedimentary rocks Sedimentary sandstone and limestone 1.The softest rock type 2.Contain layers 3. Sometimes have fossils trapped within them. 4. Made from small grains weakly held together so rocks are often porous typeexamples description

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle  I am formed from layers of sediment laid down in lakes or seas over millions of years.  I tend to be crumbly and porous.  My layers are stuck together with salt crystals (minerals)  Fossils ( remains of plants and animals) can form in my sediments  Examples of me are limestone, chalk and sandstone

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle  I am formed from cooled molten (melted) magma which is pushed up to the surface of the crust – and often out through volcanoes.  I am called extrusive if I cool above ground and intrusive if I cool below the ground.  I am very hard and have crystals. The slower I cool the larger my crystals.  Examples of me are granite and basalt.  Do intrusive or extrusive rocks have the larger crystals?  Why?

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle  I am formed from existing rocks that have been changed by great heat and pressure over long periods of time.  I am usually hard.  I may have really tiny crystals, I may have some layers and I may have some distorted fossils.  Examples of me are marble, slate and schist.

Describe how each of the rock types are formed Explain how the 3 rock types are linked Outcomes State the 3 types of rock Key Words Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary Learning Outcome: Understand the rock cycle Sedimentary Chalk Sandstone Conglomerate formed from fragments of old rocks & dead organisms that settled and formed a sediment (often on the bottom of the sea or a lake) compressed over millions of years into rocks
