Quick Write: What’s a memorable experience you’ve had with poetry?  Reading it, writing it, memorizing it…  Describe how you felt about the poem(s), about poetry in general.  Write a little story. :)

Poetry “Don’t read it fast just because it’s short.” (P. Thomas, personal communication, 2015) This is not MLA; it’s APA.

Unit Calendar/Overview  Format for each day.  Reading journal options.  Ten, fifteen minutes TOPS. (I’m serious.)  Overview of assignments and due dates.  Brief glance at final paper prompt for the unit.

Vocabulary  There is a lot.  It’s not fun.  It’s useful to know.  Study the list (flashcards, whatever).  There will be a quiz on Monday. :D

Prosody Because I already know I’ll pronounce this wrong—and I don’t want you to do it too—we say the word “prosody” like this: praw-zuh-dee (Think “awe” in awesome.) Now you can look at your vocab list.

And now...we read.  “The Windhover”  “In Memoriam John Coltrane”  Read out loud  Students annotate  Focus on prosody

Discuss in your groups (of 4):  What elements of prosody do you see?  What effect do they have on you?  How do they make you feel?  What did you like about the poem?  What did you dislike about the poem?

Homework:  Read and annotate:  “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers”  “So Much Happiness”  Write reading journals 4 and 5.
