Comet ISON May Have Survived

Engine Trouble Delays SpaceX Launch on Thanksgiving

Do Black Holes Come in Size Medium?

Sunday, December 1 Jupiter's Great Red Spot, usually pale orange-tan, has turned unusually dark and prominent this season. It crosses the planet's central meridian tonight around 10:46 p.m. EST and will be almost as visible for an hour before and after that time. All of the Red Spot's transit times this month, and all of the antics performed by Jupiter's moons, are listed in the December Sky & Telescope, pages 51 and 52. December Sky & Telescope Monday, December 2 Mars is passing 1.2° upper left of the 3.6-magnitude star Beta Virginis before dawn this morning and tomorrow morning — a sidelight from the Comet ISON hunt. Look for Mars shining very high in the southeast before dawn gets too bright. The Night Sky Friday, November 29 This is the time of year when the Great Square of Pegasus floats highest overhead at dinnertime. Its western side points far down almost to Fomalhaut shining in the south. Its eastern side points less directly down toward Beta Ceti (Diphda), less far below. Saturday, November 30 Which rises first: bright Jupiter in the east-northeast, or bright Rigel in Orion's foot in the east-southeast? Both are up by about 8 p.m. depending on where you live. At the latitudes of the U.S. and southern Canada, Rigel comes first tonight. As far north as Paris (latitude 49°) and points farther north, Jupiter is first. Sunday morning may give you a chance to try to pick up Comet ISON 's remains. But it will be very low above the dawn horizon. Saturn, the crescent Moon, and Mercury guide your way to the right spot, as shown above. Bring binoculars or a wide-field scope. And check our Latest Updates on Comet ISON page for news.Latest Updates on Comet ISON Sky & Telescope
