Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Mark Johnston TNC15, Porto Plans in GEANT Innovation on the Production Network 15 th June 2015 Chief Network Operations officer, GÉANT

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People 2 Contents Drivers for Innovation on the Production Network Barriers to Innovation on the Production Network Introducing the GEANT network and operational verification capability Next steps

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Labs cannot replicate the networked environment necessary to make decisions to move services out of hardware and into software Migration approaches need to be developed and proven Inter network working needs verifying Network; performance measurement, assurance and validation solutions need development & verification Larger flows and more complex applications infers greater security threats Development of new tools, capabilities and best practices to mitigate these threats, they will need verification also To keep pace with growing data transfer & processing new infrastructure and new services are required and to enable the sharing of that expensive infrastructure existing systems and ways of operating need to be enhanced and integrated Labs cannot recreate all the elements - data acquisition, transfer, storage, management, mining and processing Labs cannot recreate the necessary integration Labs genrally restricted from users 3 Drivers for Innovation on the Production Network Labs do not replicate a production network

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Network is carrying live traffic and services bound by contractual SLAs Not easy to disrupt the integrity of the network Innovation often requires early versions of new operating systems Certifying new code production worthy takes extension manpower and is costly Slows down innovation process Changes have to be controlled and undertaken in maintenance windows Limits freedom and autonomy Restricts iterative and adhoc changes Potential for innovation changes to conflict with required production changes / planned maintenance Additional complexity of dual sets of configuration (innovation and production) Complicates isolating and diagnosing problems Innovation activity always plays second fiddle to production activity if on same platform Slows down innovation process 4 Barriers to Innovation on the Production Network By definition production is not innovation

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Plan is to create a GEANT network and operational verification capability Capability as it is more than just a hardware and connectivity The purpose Assessment, testing & verification of new technologies Assessment, testing and verification of infrastructure and or application interworking development, testing & verification of new tools and applications development, testing & verification of operational methodologies development, testing & verification of migration approaches and methodologies What is it physical infrastructure networking technologies Tools & applications network, IT & software People Whatever it needs to be – constantly evolving based on the need 5 A capability is require to evaluate new technologies, tools and operational methodologies on distributed infrastructure in a production like environment separated from production services and operations

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Understand who would want to use it and for what Define in more detail what it is and the capabilities it needs to have We have GTS and other test-beds for experiments – understand how we can leverage those Obtain collaboration partners to help and donate resources Design it Determine how to build, run and support it Develop Implementation plan & cost it Build into work-plan and deliver it 6 Next steps

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Implementation and operation of a Software Defined Network Evaluate migration of current connectivity services into software Interworking of different SDN domains Interworking of our current networks with a Software Defined Network Integration and virtualisation at scale of different resources Evaluate greater integration and sharing of infrastructure between RENs, between GEANT and RENs, between eInfrastcuture projects Others??? 7 Immediate use cases

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People Style Guide A Guide to Using the New GÉANT Template This template is for use both to present information on behalf of the GÉANT Project (GN4-1) and for the organisation Font is Calibri and will auto-size. Avoid using a font size less than 18pt. Main font colour is Teal, Subtitle colour is Crimson and should be used sparingly. If the colours are not shown in PowerPoint use the colour picker to select the correct colour from the logo or these samples The title slide has space for the speaker’s own organisation logo which should be no larger than the main GÉANT logo There are two end slide versions: One for Project (GN4-1) presentations which includes EU logo, copyright, and funding statement One for when presenting on behalf of the organisation If in doubt contact your line manager for clarification on which version to use 10
