CHAPTER 23: HAN DYNASTY

INTRODUCTION After the Qin, lasted 400 years 206 B.C.E- 220 C.E. Began with Liu Bang during rebellion Han leaders implemented many changes Confucian ideals China enjoyed a Golden Age during Han dynasty Many important inventions and achievements

HAN DYNASTY WARFARE Excelled in warfare All men had to serve 2 years in army New technologies Advances in iron Fish scale armor, first to have iron swords Common weapon: crossbow (just like Daryl in Walking Dead!) Invented the kite for military strategy The crossbow is my favorite just like the Han army!

STOP! GOFORMATIVE BREAK! QUESTION NUMBER 1 UNDER ASSIGNMENT CHAPTER 23 DON’T HAVE YOUR DEVICE? PARTNER UP WITH SOMEONE NEXT TO YOU, OR DRAW WHAT YOU THINK THE FISH SCALE ARMOR WOULD LOOK LIKE ON THE SIDE OF YOUR PAPER

HAN DYNASTY GOVERNMENT Brought Confucian ideas into govt. Different than harsh leadership of Qin dynasty Bureaucracy: a form of government that is structured like a pyramid, few people at the top and many at the bottom Change in how civil servants were hired Ability, not inherited Not allowed to work in home district Evaluated every 3 years Bronze coin from the Han dynasty

HAN DYNASTY AGRICULTURE Farmers grew food for family and granaries Made own clothing, houses, 1 month unpaid labor to govt. Invention: chain pump Moved water from low irrigation ditches First to pour iron molds Iron plows Invention: wheel barrow Example of an iron plow

HAN DYNASTY INDUSTRY Two industries: silk and salt Invention: foot powered machine Made silk production more efficient Learned how to mine salt underground Iron tipped bamboo drills Salt was used to preserve meat and vegetables Everybody outside of China loves trading for our silk. So thankful for this machine so we can produce and trade a lot of it!

STOP! GOFORMATIVE BREAK! QUESTION NUMBER TWO UNDER ASSIGNMENT CHAPTER 23 NO DEVICE TODAY? PARTNER UP WITH SOMEONE NEXT TO YOU OR ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION ON THE SIDE OF YOUR NOTES: WHY WAS MAKING SILK PRODUCTION MORE EFFICIENT IMPORTANT?

HAN DYNASTY ART Invention: paper Helpful for calligraphy: the art of fine handwriting Before paper, writing was done on silk or bamboo Bamboo was cheaper, but awkward Paper changed the way people communicated Variety of materials went into making paper Silk fibers, hemp, bamboo, straw, seaweed Example of calligraphy

HAN DYNASTY MEDICINE Ideas from Han dynasty still used today Illness happens from yin/yang imbalance Technique: acupuncture Cures fast illnesses, headaches Technique: moxibustion Treats long term illnesses, arthritis Discovery: pulse, blood circulation Anesthetic: something that takes away the feeling of pain This cone of burning powdered leaves is relieving my arthritis pain. Thanks moxibustion! Oww

HAN DYNASTY SCIENCE Astronomers recorded comets, discovered why moon shines, solar eclipses Invention: seismograph- an instrument for detecting earthquakes Invention : magnetic compass- an instrument for determining direction Homes, temples should be north or south for luck Lodestone: a type of iron ore Ancient Chinese seismograph (If there is an earthquake, the copper ball inside will drop out from the mouth of one dragon and fall right into the mouth of the toad below. (There are eight dragons representing eight directions.) From the falling direction of the ball, we can judge where an earthquake may happen.)

REVIEW Han dynasty ruled after the Qin, lasted 400 years 206 B.C.E- 220 C.E. Advances in iron making and weaponry included iron swords, crossbow Brought Confucian ideals into government Invention of chain pump and wheel barrow Invention of paper and development of calligraphy Many advances in medical technology: circulation of blood, acupuncture, etc Invention of seismograph, compass
