Survey Results & Analysis for NCMA Board of Directors Meeting Survey (December 13, 2015) 1

Executive Summary This report contains a detailed statistical analysis of the results to the survey titled NCMA Board of Directors Meeting Survey (December 13, 2015). The results analysis includes answers from all respondents who took the survey in the 12 day period from Sunday, December 13, 2015 to Thursday, December 24, completed responses were received to the survey during this time. 2

Comments: We should have gotten the RMMS report before hand to read. Data on screens was way to small to see and too much to absorb while sitting at the table. Strongly Agree16 Agree2 Somewhat Agree0 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 1) Did you receive the board packet (board briefs, operations report, etc.) with enough time to prepare for the board meeting?

Comments: Strategy had an important place on the agenda Strongly Agree10 Agree7 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 2) Was the relationship between the agenda topics and the board's strategy clear?

Strongly Agree8 Agree9 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 Comments: Board focused on Operations for the most part. Strategy need to be addressed. Mostly on strategy / policy, but I think we have a hard time stopping ourselves from dipping into operational issues. Personally, I find that's because there isn't enough information about operational implementation to meet the association's goals. 3) Did the board discussions focus on strategy and policy issues versus operational issues?

Strongly Agree10 Agree3 Somewhat Agree5 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 Comments: Association is healthy. Need to have investment discussions going forward. I would suggest a scorecard Mike reports every BOD meeting. Should show trends on membership, certifications, registrations for symposiums, other sales, income/expenses against prior year, etc. Would like to see more metrics vice anecdotes. I would like more information regarding the plan to tackle the "membership" program, at a minimum. I find there to be a lack of data around our strategic thrusts. For example, membership is an issue, but we aren't looking at membership or number of chapters over the past 10 years. 4) Did you receive sufficient information related to the health of the association's program and services?

Strongly Agree17 Agree1 Somewhat Agree0 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 Comments: Sam Smith is doing an excellent job keeping the committee informed. 5) Do you think the board is adequately monitoring the association's financial health?

Strongly Agree9 Agree8 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 Comments: More data about membership demographics needed to ascertain possible root causes for membership decline to be able to determine strategies. Except for ED. Board discussions were, but some operational updates and surrounding discussions were lacking in places. Very good dialogue at the board meeting. 6) Were discussions constructive and meaningful with facts and supporting information?

Comments: I liked the idea of setting time aside specifically to discuss elements of the Association strategy Strongly Agree12 Agree4 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 7) Was adequate time allowed for board members to ask questions and explore issues?

Comments: Hopefully more root cause understanding of membership dynamics after review vice ED explanation. Strongly Agree10 Agree6 Somewhat Agree2 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 8) Did the board discuss and constructively challenge recommendations made by the president, executive director, or other board members?

Comments: I appreciated how the motions were clearly identified in the board packet, and the discussion and voting occurred during the committee report. Strongly Agree7 Agree10 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 9) Did the board effectively make decisions and take actions when needed?

Comments: We should set aside time for the Association strategy at each meeting to foster understanding of the strategy and new ideas. Strongly Agree9 Agree6 Somewhat Agree3 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 10) Did the board use the association's mission and vision to drive its decisions?

Strongly Agree13 Agree4 Somewhat Agree1 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 Comments: None 11) Did the meeting foster trust and respect among board members?

Comments: I feel that my voice, and the other board member's voices are being heard in the discussion. Strongly Agree12 Agree6 Somewhat Agree0 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 12) Did you feel engaged in the discussion?

Comments: None Strongly Agree12 Agree5 Somewhat Agree0 Somewhat Disagree1 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 13) Did the board use effective meeting practices (such as setting clear agendas, having good facilitation, and managing time well)?

Comments: Nice addition to recite back at end of meeting. Strongly Agree17 Agree1 Somewhat Agree0 Somewhat Disagree0 Disagree0 Strongly Disagree0 14) Were accurate action items recorded and read at the end of the meeting for concurrence by the board members?

15) Any other comments, observations or recommendations to improve the board’s performance? Good meeting. Great meeting all around! Staff and Board are working more effectively together than ever. Well prepared and effective use of time Tremendous work by staff, as usual. Solid Board meeting. I think the Board needs more information about the tie between Operational plans and Strategy on the topics of Membership (recovery) and Chapter Development (and sustainment) before we can "stay" at a strategic level.
