  Michael I Fyodorovich was the first Russian Tsar that began the Romanov empire. His reign was at the end of the Time of Troubles.  After Michael, the heir was his only son, Alexei. When his death came, the throne was disputed between his first and second wife. It was taken by his second wife’s son, who came to be Peter the Great.  Peter the Great’s only son did not believe in the views of his father and ran away when he was called to the throne. His father had him executed, leaving Russia without a rightful male heir. He left the throne to his second wife, Empress Catherine, who later allowed her son Ivan to be ruler. The Line of Rulers

 Michael I Michael I of Russia’s rule marked the end of the Time of Troubles. His first change as tsar was that he had to clear the land of the countries currently occupying Russia. The past quarrels with Sweden and Poland were dealt with by the peace of Stolbovo, which was a peace treaty with Spain. The Truce of Deulino was a treaty signed between Poland and Russia, and it secured that they would ally together instead of starting a new war.

 Alexei Mikhailovich Alexei was announced tazr of Russia in 1645 after his father’s death. Being the age of 16, Boris Morozov took responsibility of his guardian and helped him rule. He issued a foreign policy, which avoided complications with the Ottoman Empire, but also stopped trade with many foreign traders. Alexei was not favorable among the people because of the new legal code, Sobornoye Ulozhenie. It made a new surf class for slaves and peasants. Travel between towns was forbidden without an international passport which made the citizens dislike him even more.

 Peter the Great In 1672, Peter the Great became the ruler of Russia. He was the most influential tsar of the Romanov Empire. He created the first Russian Navy, made changes to how the military was run, and expanded the trade of the country. St. Petersburg was created by him, which is now an important part of the Russian culture today. He modernized Russia and began to change how it was seen.

  After the death of Peter the Great, the throne was left to Catherine. All of Peter’s sons had died before they were able to take power.  When Catherine took over, she had the assistance of the Supreme Privy Council, which helped make important decisions. Empress Catherine
