Les adjectifs Adjectives

Definition ADJECTIVES are words that describe people, places, and things. In French, MASCULINE adjectives are used with masculine nouns, and FEMININE adjectives are used with feminine nouns. This is the NOUN-ADJECTIVE AGREEMENT

Masculine and feminine forms In French, feminine adjectives are usually formed as follows: MASCULINE ADJECTIVE + -e = FEMININE ADJECTIVE grand grande Usually the masculine and feminine forms are pronounced differently.

Exceptions Jérôme est jeune. Juliette est jeune. If the masculine adjective ends in -e, there is no change in the feminine form. Jérôme est jeune. Juliette est jeune.

Plural forms In French, plural adjectives are usually formed as follows: SINGULAR ADJECTIVE + -s = PLURAL ADJECTIVE un garçon intelligent des garçons intelligents une fille intelligente des filles intelligentes The plural ending –s is silent.

Exceptions If the masculine adjective ends in –s in the singular form, there is no change in the masculine plural form. Marc est français. Antoine et Éric sont français.

Regular and Irregular adjectives Adjectives that follow the above patterns are called REGULAR adjectives. Those that do not are called IRREGULAR adjectives. For example: Marc est beau. Sylvie est belle.
