Presentation transcript:

 1. Why did Japan open up to foreign trade?  2. Who became the new emperor of Japan? Why is he important?  3. What 2 wars did Japan win? Why did they fight these wars?

 Western powers wanted to create trade with China, and were able to carve out spheres of influence in China  China lost 2 really important wars: Opium war, and Sino-Japanese war

 China got their butts kicked really bad, and everyone saw how weak they were, so countries rushed in to take over certain ports for trade  The US was afraid of losing trading rights in China to the more aggressive Euros  US and European countries create the open door policy

 During the time of Imperialism, the Latin American countries were really intimidated by the USA  Spain wanted Latin American lands  British didn’t like that idea

 British asked the US to help them keep Spain from taking Latin America  US President Monroe issues the Monroe Doctrine  The Americas aren’t able to be colonized by Europeans.

 The US made many Latin American countries their sphere of influence or protectorate  They added to the Monroe Doctrine, with the Roosevelt Corollary  This made the US the “police power” in the western hemisphere

 Keep your notes out! We are going to review for your quiz tomorrow
