History of MG Program in OR 1914 Smith-Lever Act Formalizes Extension Partnership between USDA, land grant universities and counties 1911 Extension Service formed at Oregon Agricultural College Mission: Educate communities on practical applications of research-based knowledge 1976 Master Gardener Program established in Oregon Started in response to funding cuts and high demand for gardening information by the general public 1985 Oregon Master Gardeners Association Formed Created principally to support and supplement OSU’s Master Gardener Program across the state
