As a genre it is quite new, so there isn’t much history.

History of Indie Rock Indie started off as a term to describe the artists that didn’t want to be part of a major record label and instead wanted to do it all themselves. In the 80s it changed as a term to describe the genre on music, and less to do with what label you was with. In the 1980s Indie Rock developed, but still wasn’t very popular. Artists from this decade included R.E.M and The Smiths. In the 1990s Indie Rock got more popular and were competing with other genres for number 1 single position. Artists from this decade included Oasis and Blur.

History of Indie Rock In 2000s Indie Rock peaked at popularity. Many bands such as The Killers, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes all rose to fame with various number 1 singles and albums. Also in the 2000s, Indie divided into other sub- genres. There was Indie Punk (e.g. The White Stripes and The Vines), Emo (e.g. My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy) and Indietronica (e.g. Hot Chip and MGMT).

This made an opportunity for artists to put their music videos on the internet in places that are easily accessible. In 2005, the first Guitar Hero game was released. However these are the least popular ways of distribution as people tend to watch music videos online.
