Locating places and calculating time Prepared by: Ms. Siddhi Hegde Pawar Public School Kandivali

How to locate a place on earth????

A XIS The axis is an imaginary line around which the earth spins The earth’s axis is tilted at 23.5º P OLES The two ends of the axis. The pole facing north star is called North Pole. The pole on opposite side is called South Pole.

G RID SYSTEM C OORDINATE

L ATITUDE AND LINES OF LATITUDE The angular distance of a place from the centre of the earth, either north or south of equator is the latitude of that place. Since latitude is an angle, the latitude of any place is represented in degrees. The lines of latitude are imaginary lines joining all the places having the same angular distance north or south of the equator. As these lines are parallel to each other they are known as parallels of latitude.

High latitudes Low latitudes

F EATURES OF THE LINES OF LATITUDE Horizontal lines. Parallel Equal distance. Equator is largest latitude – great circle. Length of parallels decreasing towards poles – small circle. Poles are only points. Interval of 1º. 1º = 111 km (40000/360 =111) approximately.
