Purpose Students apply their knowledge of various forage species to evaluate hay based on physical properties, identify species common to pastures and complete a quiz that tests team members’ knowledge of different aspects of forage production and evaluation.
Rule and Guidelines Each team with consist of 3 to 4 members with the top three individuals being used for the team score. There are a total of four components: 6 hay placement classes Plant identification An exam over designated chapters (posted to the Texas FFA webpage by Oct. 1 st of each new year) And a problem solving component They are given twenty minutes to complete each component Contestants are not allowed to bring their own calculators, if they are needed they will be provided by the contest host. All the samples in a given class should be of the same species Contestant must identify 30 pasture grasses, legumes, and weeds from the Forage Evaluation CDE Plant list. Specimen will be mounted or live or a combination of both and if possible will contain an inflorescence, flower or fruiting structure. Scoring/Tie Breakers Hay Placement Classes 300 Plant I.D 300 Exam 300 Problem Solving 100 Total Points Individual 1,000 Team 3,00 1. The team with the high point individual wins. 2. If still tied, the team with the highest score on the Quiz wins. 3. If still tied, a coin toss will decide the winner. Preparing a Forage CDE Team On the Texas FFA website they provide ahead of time the chapters in which they will use for the contest along with information as to where to get the proper books and material for this CDE.
