Analyzing Literature with Feminist Criticism

Remember Critique = Analyze –So, a criticism is just an analysis

Feminism Feminist criticism is concerned with "...the ways in which literature reinforces or undermines the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women”

How do I analyze literature using Feminist Criticism? 1.Make note of all the feminine characters and where they are found in the text. 2.Identify the power relationships between female and male characters. 3.Compare the female characters to both positive and negative stereotypes of women. –Do they fit these stereotypes or act against them? –Are they successful? 4.Look at all your evidence and make a statement about the role of feminine characters within the work. What is the author attempting to suggest about women?

Let’s Practice: Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella –Who are the female characters and what do they do? –Are there any interactions with men? If so, what is the power relationship like? –Any stereotypes upheld or broken? –What do we learn about women from reading this text?

Xerox Commercial

Example Statements Mr. Tolbert’s version of Hansel and Gretel portrays women as morally strong but socially weak as they are never listened to and constantly act as followers. The Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella contributes to the oppression of women and shows them as being constantly dependent on men and always willing to bend to a man’s will. The Xerox commercial from the 1950s shows an extremely negative portrayal of women as a sex that is materialistic, simple, and only capable of doing the most basic and simplest of secretarial duties.

Your Turn! Watch the following video clips with a Feminist lens TAKE NOTES! You will pick ONE to do a brief analysis with.
