Cardiovascular Health By: Theo Jesberger

What is the Cardiovascular System? ●Consists of the heart, blood vessels, and the transfer of blood throughout the body. ●When the lungs are incorporated it is called the cardiopulmonary system. ●Relates to the health of other organs that depend on a strong blood supply.

Functions of the Cardiovascular System Closed system Carries out complex tasks Protects body from infections, toxins, and blood loss Helps regulate body temperature, fluid balance, and PH levels

Heart ❖ Hardest working muscle ❖ Only muscle that never stops contracting ❖ An average of 2.5 billion beats in a lifetime ❖ 5-6 liters of blood pumped per minute ❖ Can pump upwards of 30 LPM during extreme stress or exercise

Anatomy of the Heart ❖ Consists of 4 chambers ❖ Divided into left and right sides ➢ Right side- Pulmonary ➢ Left side- Systemic ❖ Two main vessels ➢ Aorta- Large artery that distributes blood to the body ➢ Vena Cava- 2 large veins in which blood is returned to the heart

Cardiovascular Disease ❖ Collective term for various diseases of the heart and blood vessels ➢ Atherosclerosis- Narrowing of arteries ➢ Hypertension- High blood pressure ■ Normal: 120/80 ■ Prehypertension: /80-89 ■ Hypertension: /90-99 ■ Stage 2: 160+/100+ ❖ Leading cause of death in America ❖ Directly correlated to obesity

Prevention ❖ Eat heart healthy ❖ Regular exercise ❖ Avoid tobacco ❖ Avoid excessive alcohol ❖ Regular doctor visits Risk Factors ❖ Tobacco use ❖ High blood pressure ❖ High cholesterol ❖ Physically inactive ❖ Diets high in fat ❖ Obesity ❖ Diabetes

Statistics ★ 47% of adults over 18 have some form of CVD ○ Men have a greater risk than women ★ 33% of Americans have high blood pressure ○ 20% are unaware ★ 65% of people with diabetes die from CVD ★ 795,000 Americans suffer from strokes each year ★ Average age of first heart attack is 66 for men 70 for women
