What is the Cardiovascular System? ●Consists of the heart, blood vessels, and the transfer of blood throughout the body. ●When the lungs are incorporated it is called the cardiopulmonary system. ●Relates to the health of other organs that depend on a strong blood supply.
Functions of the Cardiovascular System Closed system Carries out complex tasks Protects body from infections, toxins, and blood loss Helps regulate body temperature, fluid balance, and PH levels
Heart ❖ Hardest working muscle ❖ Only muscle that never stops contracting ❖ An average of 2.5 billion beats in a lifetime ❖ 5-6 liters of blood pumped per minute ❖ Can pump upwards of 30 LPM during extreme stress or exercise
Anatomy of the Heart ❖ Consists of 4 chambers ❖ Divided into left and right sides ➢ Right side- Pulmonary ➢ Left side- Systemic ❖ Two main vessels ➢ Aorta- Large artery that distributes blood to the body ➢ Vena Cava- 2 large veins in which blood is returned to the heart
