Puberty  Puberty is when an individual becomes capable of sexual reproduction  Stage lasts 2-3 years  The fast rate of growth since infancy  Puberty ends when sexual reproduction becomes possible, but growth continues  Average age puberty begins between the ages of 9 and 11 for girls and 11 and 13 for boys

Adolescence  A term used to describe the period from puberty until growth ceases and adulthood is reached  In women, this period usually lasts until ages  In men, this period usually lasts until ages years of age  Physical changes that take place during adolescence are caused, in part, by hormones

Hormones  Chemical substances in the body that trigger certain types of physical growth  Visible signs of sexual development appear  In men, physical changes include the enlargement of the genitals, the appearance of pubic hair, and a deepening of the voice  In females, increase in height, increase in fat, breast enlarge, and pubic and underarm hair appear. The menstrual cycle begins shortly after these physical changes occur

 After reviewing the different types of growth, complete “Personal Growth to Maturity” worksheet Warm-Up

Then, write why you choose these specific events.  Present your timeline to your group…YES, everyone has to present

The Developmental Tasks of Teens  Robert Havighurst, an educator and behavioral specialist, has stated that teens will be challenged to meet their personal needs and handle new expectations placed on them by society These are tasks or skills society has come to expect of people at various ages Success in these tasks lead to contentment

Developmental Tasks  Accept physique and use the body effectively  Establish emotional independence from parents and other adults  Achieve new and more mature relations with peers  Adopt socially approved masculine or feminine roles  Select and prepare for an occupation  Develop a personal attitude toward marriage and family living  Adopt personal behavior standards  Accept and adopt socially responsible behavior
