3 What is Advising? Successful advising requires a responsible joint effort between the student and the advisor Advising is an essential part of the student’s university experience. Assisting the student in choosing classes Helping with registration Career guidance Developing mentoring relationships Forming a connection

4 Good Advising Retains students Clarifies the importance and mission of general education Connects the students with the wider campus community Broadens a student’s perspective Builds valuable skills

This session will prepare new advisors to face their first class of first-year students by learning the essentials of advising. What will be covered: FERPA General Catalog UI Core/State Board Core Placement Procedures for Math, English & Chemistry Best practices in designing a student’s schedule 5 Overview

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Academic advisors cannot share academic information (e.g. class schedule, degree choices, class grades, etc.) with anyone without the student’s written consent When in doubt, refer to the Registrar’s Office 6 FERPA

8 UI Core Curricula 2007 and before – Core Clusters  Refer to an experienced advisor in your department Core – Core Discovery  Seven-credit sequence during the first year  Students with unfulfilled Core Discovery requirements should be referred to an experienced advisor in the department Core – Integrated Seminar (ISEM)

9 Dealing with Core issues Only the Academic Petitions Committee can adjust general core requirements Students may update their core catalog year  Students may split their curriculum – one core catalog year and a different catalog year for degree requirements Core “What if” in Degree Audit is a great tool
