Introduction Welcome to year two of IB Chemistry SL/HL course. This year is where the curriculum all comes together. The goal of this year is for you to prepare yourself to take the three SL/HL IB chemistry paper exams in May This is the second year of IB Chemistry SL/HL This is a year long class

Introduction Difference between SL and HL SL: Depth of the material Paper 1: Worth 20% of your grade, it is the multiple choice section. For SL, you get 45 minutes to answer 30 questions Paper 2: You get 1 hour and 15 minutes in SL worth 32% of your grade. Paper 3: This is the options portion that you get only 1 hour in SL. Basically, you get a choice of many options This is worth 24% of your grade. Internal Assessments: IAs are lab reports. IA’s are worth about 24% of your grade. (must do 2 complete lab reports) 40 hours of Lab Activities documented

Course Objectives 3. Construct, analyze and evaluate: a. hypotheses, research questions and predictions b. scientific methods and techniques c. scientific explanations. 4. Demonstrate the personal skills of cooperation, perseverance and responsibility appropriate for effective scientific investigation and problem solving. 5. Demonstrate the manipulative skills necessary to carry out scientific investigations with precision and safety.

Requirements Must have completed year 1 of IB chemistry either SL or HL Must be at Algebra II or higher Or Common Core Math 2 A positive attitude

Course of Study Topics Stoichiometry--- This will be a review Periodicity --- This will be a review Bonding –This will be a review Acids and Bases Organic Chemistry Bio Chemistry Nuclear chemistry * Start point will be were left off last year

Materials You will need to bring the following materials to class every day:  Calculator (every day, must have a Log function button)  3 ring binder, at least 1.5”, used exclusively for IB Chem SL/HL  Dividers for the different units  Composition notebook (one for labs and one for reflections)  Paper  Pens & pencils  USB drive/flash drive (8 gigs as a minimum) *You will also be responsible for identifying and supplying various inexpensive materials with which to conduct your experiments throughout the year.

Grading Grades will be based upon the IB grading scale of 7. Below is a breakdown of what the IB scores mean and what percentage that equates to on the traditional scale. An IB Grade of 4 is passing

Grading Assignments will be based on the following weighted scale: Exams –50% Labs –20% Assignments—20% Final--10%

Quizzes Quizzes are everyday These will range from 5-20 points per quiz It will cover the previous days material For example our next class period quiz will cover this intro material

Labs Lab write-ups are due 2 class period days after the completion of the lab Adhere to all lab safety requirements Participation from all lab partners is required DO NOT miss lab days

Reflections Each Friday of class each you will write a reflection of what you have learned during the week in your reflection notebook. It should include the learning targets for the week How you meet those learning targets The length should be words

Homework There will be time allotted in each class to work on some of the home work There will be homework in this class If no due date is given assume that it is due the next class period

Study Groups Suggest that you form small study groups (3-4 people). Studies show that students who form study groups score higher on high stakes exams

KEYS TO SUCCESS Cell phones, tablets, or personal computers Are allowed in class. This is a privilege. Electronic etiquette is in effect. If they are on during the instructional period or you are searching a web site you should not be you will lose the privilege. No Food or Drinks in the classroom except water in clear bottles with a screw cap. Stay in seats until the bell rings Lectures and assignments can be found on Schoolwires
