Lesson 1.7 A Problem Solving Plan Essential Question: How do you use the problem solving plan to solve problems?

Before we start… You want to buy an iPad. You can buy an iPad for $500 on sale with tax. You are currently earning $20 a week for doing chores. How many weeks will it take you to save enough money for your iPad?

Problem Solving Plan 1. READ and UNDERSTAND the problem * What do you know? * What do you need to find out? 2. Develop a PLAN * Have you ever solved a similar problem? * What strategies can you use? * Estimate an answer. 3. SOLVE the problem * Carry out the plan. * Do you need to try another strategy? * What is the solution? 4. LOOK BACK * Did you answer the right question? * Does your answer make sense?

What is unit analysis? Checking that your answer contains the correct units when evaluating expressions with units of measure

How do you use the problem solving plan to solve a problem? By the steps in the plan you can identify what you need to know, decide on a strategy to use, carry out the strategy, and then check that the answer you calculate is reasonable.

Walking You are walking in a 5 mile fundraising event. You walked the first 2 miles in 40 minutes. How long will it take you to finish the event walking at the same rate?

Baking You volunteered to make 576 muffins for a school bake sale. Each batch makes 36 muffins. How many batches of muffins do you need to make?

Earnings Debra has two jobs. She earns $5 an hour baby-sitting and $9 an hour working as a cashier at a grocery store. She will work 13 hours baby-sitting and 23 hours at the grocery store this week. How much money will she earn?

Money Steven lives in Chicago and wants to visit his older sister in Houston. He has saved $59 already for a round-trip airplane ticket from Chicago to Houston. The ticket will cost him $185. He earns $9 per lawn mowing for his neighbors. How many lawns will he need to mow to have enough money for the ticket?

Triathlon You and a friend decide to compete in a triathlon. You both swim 200 meters, bike 10 kilometers, and then run 2 kilometers. The table shows your speeds for swimming in meters per minute, and biking in kilometers per minute. Who has the better total time after these two stages? Swimming (m/min)Biking (km/min) You Friend

City Blocks In parts of New York City, the blocks between avenues are called long blocks. There are 4 long blocks per mile. Blocks between streets are called short blocks. There are 20 short blocks per mile. You walk 40 short blocks and 6 long blocks. How many miles do you walk?

How do you use the problem solving plan to solve problems?

Ticket Out the Door The cost of a ticket to a baseball game is $10. The cost of a hot dog is $2. Matt goes to the game and has 3 hot dogs. How much does he spend?
