The Local Public Data Agenda: Programme Overview Local Public Data Panel – 19 January 2010

Making Public Data Public : CLG’s contribution Main policy objectives More efficient and joined-up local public service delivery More accessible and personalised local services through new innovative tools and services Empowering citizens and strengthening local democracy through greater transparency and scrutiny Key CLG public data programmes Ordnance Survey Local Data Exchange Local Information Partnerships* Related CLG initiatives Total Place LAA performance Local Spending Reports OEP and VFM benchmarking Local Public Data Panel Champion greater local public data provision Identify key local data; agree content and format Promote data linking and information sharing Encourage innovative uses of local public data Local Public Data Panel, to be chaired by Professor Nigel Shadbolt. We’ve also established a Local Public Data Programme Board. Both are supported by the new Local Public Data Unit – based in GSE * Subject to approval by the Secretary of State

CLG’s programme of work PolicyGoals Champion local public data provision Working with Local Public Data Panel to champion agenda among local authorities and strategic partners and accelerate the pace of data sharing and release Develop initial or core data set offer that local authorities could be encouraged to place online Build framework which promotes sharing of data and information Broaden the role of the Data Interchange Hub to become a genuine Local Data Exchange Publish Local Spending Reports online Encourage and showcase innovative data sharing and re-use Develop options for providing incentives to developers for new and creative uses of local data, working in conjunction with Cabinet Office Publication of CLG data and data on central government funding by local authority Contribute data sets to data.gov.uk (already CLG has provided 70 for the launch). Look at other opportunities to put CLG data in the public domain – including Local Spending Reports Develop common standards/data formats Consider role out of Local Information Partnerships to establish a standards-based approach for sharing and integrating data across partnerships Influence wider debate on standards for data release Reform of Ordnance Survey Phase in a new business model for the Ordnance Survey to enable the release of geographic information
