Abnormal Psych-defined The study of people who suffer from psychological disorders. Disorders may be manifested in a person’s behavior and/or thoughts. Encompasses the study of problems such as depression, substance abuse, and learning difficulties as well as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia

Common Characteristics: Maladaptive (harmful) and/or disturbing to the individual Example: Agoraphobia-fear of open spaces Disturbing to others Example: Zoophilia-being sexually aroused by animals Unusual (not shared by many members of the population) Irrational (doesn’t make sense to the average person) Example: prolonged depression due to virtually any situation

Misconceptions: People may be diagnosed with a psychological disorder even if they are not experiencing all or even most of the characteristics. “Insane” is not a medical term “Insanity” is a legal term Differentiates those that can be fully held responsible for their actions due to a psychological disorder (sane) and those that cannot

Group Assignment: In your group of 3, research the assigned category of psychological disorders. Provide a brief explanation of the disorder category and provide examples of 3 types of the disorders. Be sure to provide information about the disorders as outlined in the DSM-5 Explain how psychologists from the various perspectives might view the cause of some of the disorders within each category Each member should take notes on the research Final product should be posted in Google Classroom by the beginning of the next class.

Homework: Research the Rosenhan Study and the Influence of labels Explain the findings of the study and the important questions that it raises. There are many beliefs about the appropriate way to treat psychological illness. Research and explain the different types of therapy: Psychotherapy-psychoanalytic, humanistic, behaviorist, cognitive, cognitive- behavioral Provide a specific example, key concepts/techniques, founder Discuss group therapies, somatic therapies & electic therapies Explain the various therapists including levels and training-psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counseling therapists/counseling psychotherapists, psychoanalysts.
