 To help you become familiar with the placement process and terminology  To help us plan the 2 nd year of your program

What have you heard about the 2 nd year offsite placements (from students, faculty)? Based on what you’ve heard, what questions come to mind?

A series of clinical assignments to develop: Clinical competencies across the life-span Independence in the full range of professional responsibilities for practice as an SLP

Diagnostic and Treatment assignments Locations on the UW Campus* UW Speech & Hearing Clinic Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Services Center on Human Development & Disability (CHDD) *Note: Special Opportunities may also include Experimental Education Unit (EEU) SPHSC/CHMC Stuttering Camp UW Autism Center – Summer Camp Pilot

Includes a “pre-internship” and “internship” SPHSC 555 and SPHSC 601 or 602 registrations The culmination of your Master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology Tracked Winter/Spring OR Spring/Summer Completed at sites affiliated with the U.W. Formal affiliation agreement to cover all parties Learning under the direction of an ASHA certified SLP (CCC-SLP)

Pre-internship A period of orientation and initial clinical experience Usually a range of 4-12 hours/week Typically.5 to 1.5 days/week for the quarter Internship Full-time placement = just like an “employee” Usually 40 hours/week (five-8’s; four-10s…) Be prepared to rotate on weekends (unless personal conflict)

Birth to Three Centers Public Schools Private Schools Outpatient Clinics and Private Practices Hospitals Skilled Nursing Facilities Home Healthcare Agencies

 Pre-Internship & Internship 1 quarter each, or may be modified depending on site  Terminology 1st quarter is called the Pre-Internship 2 nd quarter is called the Internship  Based on your Tracking Plan: Determine when you are scheduled to complete 555 and 601 or 602

 Clinical program learning objectives are based on ASHA KASAs (e.g., PSLE = peds Dx skills) Practica: Supervisors make decisions about your rotation based on learning objectives (e.g., caseload, type of cases) Pre/Internship: Fieldwork team makes decisions about your placements based on learning objectives  Program goal (our job) is to prepare you to enter the profession

 Arranged through the fieldwork coordinator  Please do not make independent inquiries. You can observe/shadow, but not “coordinate.” In most cases, the coordinator makes the placement decision A few sites (local & long-distance) require an application process Formal could require resume, interview Informal could include the same, but more of a face-to-face  When placed, the coordinator will follow-up with all parties for next steps (e.g., onboarding, etc.)

Site Availability (fluctuates continuously) Meeting the degree program learning objectives Your clinical performance to date (i.e., SCEs, supervisor feedback) Expert guidance Schools: Kate Krings Non-schools: Kelsey Leighton

School vs. Non-school Peds vs. Adult Any interests you’ve let us know, we review.

 Official connection to you and site from fieldwork coordinator Rolling announcement; all students know approximately 2 weeks before quarter  includes instructions Arrange your schedule with supervisor Complete onboarding requirements, if any Prepare learning profile

Plan now for your transportation regardless of distance Maintain updated learning profile Be prepared to share your resume Maintain clinical compliance Act promptly to renew expiring items Be prepared to complete additional items required by site/s (e.g., drug screen, fingerprinting, additional background check) Communicate promptly Review and complete learning contract with primary supervisor

Continue to gain discipline-specific knowledge and skills to practice as an SLP Continue to develop your professional skills Physical presentation Oral and written communication Teamwork and collaboration Behavior management Self-awareness & self-regulation The goal is for you to answer “what does it take for me to do this job successfully?”

Can I get paid to do my Core internships? Typically, no Some school sites have offered a stipend Can I set up my own affiliation? No, we have over 250 affiliations so you have an amazing array of options. Study information – think- share with us – we’ll do the work Can I secure a placement now? Only if out of area site requires commitment now Do the MedSLP students get priority over CoreSLP students? No, each site is open to both degree programs Sites may indicate a preference

Graduate Program Adviser: Chrissie Chang Communicate with Chrissie “prn” to: Obtain academic advice or assistance Coursework and class registration questions Implications of program changes/leaves/withdrawals Degree requirements, etc. Discuss & get approval for independent studies or special course offerings Note: UWMC Otolaryngology IS may be available each quarter Discuss any issues that may arise with your program Request for change in program timeframe
