Presentation transcript:

Journals FYI, you’ll be asked to share a few of these ideas with a couple neighbors. List a few ideas for each of the following: ◦ Things you have heard you can, should, or have to do/say/be because of gender ◦ Things you have heard you can’t, shouldn’t or must not do/say/be because of gender

Share and Steal Share some of the things on your list with 1+ people at your table. Steal any ideas your neighbor has thought of that resonate with you or that you want to remember. ◦ You don’t have to steal it word-for-word, but if one of your neighbor’s ideas sparks a related idea for you, write it down.

“I’m not racist, but I am sexist” (hahaha)

Representations of Men and Women: By the numbers 28% of speaking characters in Hollywood movies in 2013 were female Male voiceovers outnumber female voiceovers 4:1 66% of commercials involving domestic products (food, cleaning products, etc.) use women as product representatives 70% of commercials involving non-domestic products (electronics, cars, machinery) use men as representatives

Representations of Sexual Orientation: By the numbers LGBT scripted characters represent 4.4% of all scripted series regular characters on the five broadcast networks ◦ Gay men are disproportionately represented ◦ White characters are disproportionately represented ◦ Transgender characters received the least (and most offensive) representation ◦ When LGBT characters appear, they tend to be defined by their sexual orientation

Other Recent Examples A high school senior was kicked out of her prom for wearing pants (2014) A fourteen-year-old boy was penalized for wearing makeup (2013) An eight-year-old girl was asked to leave her Christian school because she’s not “girly” enough (2014) A thirteen-year-old boy was suspended for carrying a Vera Bradley purse (2013) A nine-year-old boy was banned from bringing his “My Little Pony” bag to school (2013) Source: ThinkProgress.org

PSA, Meme, or Media Analysis Project Write down a couple ideas about topics or ideologies you might want to focus on for this project. Some ideas: ◦ Things that piss you off! (maybe go back to the list you made at the beginning of today) ◦ What we’ve discussed today or during other classes (look back at your notes) ◦ Things we haven’t discussed but that you’re interested in
