Welcome to the First Cheshire and Merseyside Healthy Providers Network Newsletter. The network has been in place since summer of The purpose of the network is to provide a collaborative forum for acute trusts and provider trusts to work together on a common theme of improving health and reducing health inequalities. Our network is chaired by Rachael Gosling, Consultant in Public Health. Following its establishment the group identified three objectives for 2013/14: Objective 1 – To establish a Cheshire and Merseyside Healthy Providers Network with representation from all provider trusts across the Cheshire and Merseyside areas. Objective 2 – To work collectively to identify opportunities and enable them to implement health promoting strategies within acute and provider settings – Four campaigns were agreed Skin Cancer Smoking Alcohol Obesity Objective 3 – To establish a framework for providers to become health promoting accredited via either the RSPH or WHO accreditation Scheme. Paula Carroll from Mersey Care High Secure Services joined the network in October Since engaging with members of the network she has championed Health Promotion within Mersey Care and in April 2013 Mersey Care were accredited by the World Health Organisation as a Health Promoting Hospital. Kate has recently been recruited to the team and through their health promotion resources and equipment they aim to improve the health and wellbeing of patients within their care. Cheshire & Merseyside Healthy Providers Network are committed to putting health and wellbeing at the heart of every contact with patients, clients, our workforce and the communities we serve. We support provider organisations to aspire to gain World Health Organisation (WHO) and/or Royal Society of Public Health accreditation. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Health Promotion Team have been raising awareness of sun safety in their Trust. They have shared their learning with the network to assist the group with the development of future campaigns. Liverpool Community Health have also been raising awareness through a month long “Tweet” campaign, posters and desktop materials and have delivered a number of activities to raise awareness of Sun Safety. Mersey Care Secure Services and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital have also delivered similar campaigns to their patients. Brief Intervention Children’s Key Message cards A working group led by Liverpool Community Health has been set up to look at developing Children’s message cards focused around making “Every Contact Count”. These cards would be used to build on the successful adult cards which are being used to deliver brief interventions across the city. Further updates will be circulated once the details and information has been finalised. Stoptober Campaign All members of the network are going to take part in the Stoptober Campaign which takes place throughout October to encourage people to quit smoking. Members of the group should contact their local stop smoking service for support on delivering this campaign. Communications Plan The communications plan has been agreed for the group and a bi monthly newsletter will be produced and circulated to members of the group and stakeholders to ensure messages and information are communicated appropriately. National Interest in Group News of our network is beginning to grow and since April this year we have been contacted by three different organisations requesting further information and support. At our June meeting we welcomed four external visitors from two organisations thus raising the profile of the group. Discussions are being led by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust on developing a national WHO Health Promoting Hospitals network which will further support the work which the group has been delivering on. Launch of the new Every Contact Counts (ECC) programme Level 1, 2 & 3 for Liverpool and Sefton Providers As outlined in LCH’s Public Health Strategy 2012, all ECC training is aligned to the Yorkshire and Humber MECC Education Framework. The Trust have now developed a range of training packages aligned to Levels 1, 2 & 3 of the framework and implementation of a two year training programme, targeting all LCH employed staff and volunteers, has begun. The training has been positively received and staff have welcomed that it is both comprehensive and tailored to job roles.
