Agenda What is Union Catalog? Background Prospectus Who is involved? The architecture of Union Catalog Protocol Metadata Architecture Functional requirements Conclusion Current Status Demonstration

What is Union Catalog? NDAP is executed by 8 major content holders and the contents are divided into 12 thematic groups. Over 90 archive systems are being used or under construction, but each of them is quite different. In order to share the digital resources built by the participating units of NDAP, the construction of a union catalog is very important not only for research but also for public. In the future, contents in union catalog may have a chance to be value-added by industry.

Who is involved?

The Architecture of Union Catalog Protocol The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)

The Architecture of Union Catalog Protocol OAI verbs GetRecordUsed to retrieve an individual metadata record from a repository. IdentifyUsed to retrieve information about a repository. ListIdentifierAn abbreviated form of LisRecords. ListMetadataFormatsUsed to retrieve the metadata formats available from a repository. ListRecordsUsed to harvest records from a repository. ListSetsUsed to retrieve the set structure of a repository.

The Architecture of Union Catalog Metadata Dublin Core (DC) TitleA name given to the resource. CreatorAn entity primarily responsible for making the content of the resource. SubjectA topic of the content of the resource. DescriptionAn account of the content of the resource. PublisherAn entity responsible for making the resource available ContributorAn entity responsible for making contributions to the content of the resource. DateThe date of an event in the lifecycle of the resource. TypeThe nature or genre of the content of the resource. FormatThe physical or digital manifestation of a resource. IdentifierAn unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context. SourceA Reference to a resource from which the present resource is derived. LanguageThe language of the intellectual content of the resource. RelationA reference to a related resource. CoverageThe extent or scope of the content of the resource. RightsInformation about rights held for and over the resource.

Conclusion Current status The greatest difficulty in building a union catalog is not developing the system, but reaching consensus among the cooperating units about the format and quality of metadata. Another issue is whether cooperating units are willing to release their content because some content has research value.
