Global Climate Change a.k.a. Global Warming

What is the green house effect?  A greenhouse is a house made of glass. It has glass walls and a glass roof. A greenhouse stays warm inside, even during winter. Sunlight shines in and warms the air inside.  The heat is trapped by the glass and can't escape. So it stays even at night.

Green house effect continued  Earth's atmosphere does the same thing as the greenhouse. Gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and methane do what the roof of a greenhouse does.  During the day, Earth's surface warms up. The heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

What is the difference between weather and climate?  Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time. Most people think of weather in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, brightness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure, as in high and low pressure. When we talk about climate change, we talk about changes in long-term averages of daily weather.

What are greenhouse gasses and why are they so bad?  Greenhouse gasses include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane  They trap heat  When we burn fossil fuels, we release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.  Natural amounts of CO2 have varied from 180 to 300 ppm over hundreds of thousands of years. Today's CO2 levels are around 400 ppm. That's 40% more than the highest natural levels over the past 800,000 years. WOW! edf.org/climate/human-activity-is-causing-global-warming

Evidence of global warming  Sea level rise-Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) in the last century. The rate in the last decade, however, is nearly double that of the last century.  Global temperature rise -All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since Most of this warming has occurred since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years having occurred since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occurring in the past 12 years. Even though the 2000s witnessed a solar output decline resulting in an unusually deep solar minimum in , surface temperatures continue to increase.  Warming oceans- The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of degrees Fahrenheit since  Shrinking ice sheets -The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometers (36 to 60 cubic miles) of ice per year between 2002 and 2006, while Antarctica lost about 152 cubic kilometers (36 cubic miles) of ice between 2002 and

Evidence continued  Declining Arctic sea ice - Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades.  Glacial retreat- Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.  Extreme events - The number of record high temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events.1111  Ocean acidification - Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.12,13 This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. What can we do about it?  Educate people and acknowledge that there is a problem.  Reduce that amount of CO2 being put into the atmosphere.  Recycle and conserve energy.  Reduce deforestation.  Buy more fuel efficient cars.  Use more public transportation.
