Objectives At the end of this session participants will be able to: –Describe the PAEA/JAAPA Student Writing Competition guidelines and submission process –Identify the benefits for students –Discuss the role of faculty involvement in student writing –Discuss common mistakes and tips for success

Survey: 1. Did your program have student submissions last year?

What is the PAEA/JAAPA Student Writing Competition? Long history, beginning in 1992 Originally called the J. Peter Nyquist Competition, now with a simple descriptive name Submission and competition for PA students’ writing, as a means to encourage writing and scholarly efforts of PA students Long collaboration with JAAPA, which has generously funded student winner travel and prizes Winners present to faculty, peers and graduate PAs at annual AAPA meeting

PAEA/JAAPA Student Writing Competition Guidelines See the PAEA web page instructions and documents: Documents: –Guidelines –Faculty Letter –Getting Started

Timeframe Solicitation for submissions –November, via PAEA blast –Updated Guidelines and page on PAEA site in November Solicitation for faculty reviewers –November through February (ongoing) Deadline for submissions –mid February

Timeframe Submissions sent to reviewers –as soon as possible! Faculty send reviews to PAEA RI Subcommittee meeting to discuss finalists –early April Presentation of papers and awards at AAPA –late May

Faculty Reviewers 127 faculty reviewed last year! Survey: 1. Have you been a faculty reviewer?

Faculty Reviewers Survey: 2. If you have not been a reviewer, would you like to be? CONTACT ERICA!

Issues/Problems Appropriate topics/formats –It is a “wide tent” Not reading documents and following guidelines –Read them! Co-authoring –All co-authors must be eligible as PA students

Issues/Problems Faculty assistance –Must be limited International submissions –They are permitted, but there may be limitations on travel reimbursement from JAAPA

Faculty Assistance The major issue that is not clear The guidelines state: “It is understood that papers written by PA students will generally receive feedback from peers and faculty regarding content and style. However, for papers to be eligible for submission to the PAEA Student Writing Competition, they should not have received more than minor editorial assistance. Such assistance may include general advice about content, grammar, and structure. However, rewriting paragraphs or sections for the student or providing major revisions to the content is beyond what would normally be expected for a paper to be considered a student’s own work.”

What next? Encourage students to submit their writing! Early planning is best. Volunteer to review papers Watch for the PAEA news item announcing the competition Come to the presentations and awards in Las Vegas
