Presentation transcript:

It’s really about an energy transformation!

Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. In a chemical reaction/change the chemical identity of matter is changed and energy may be transformed! Matter may react with – Matter – one type of matter reacts with another type of matter ex: baking soda reacting with vinegar Energy – matter reacts with energy ex: PHOTOSYNTHESIS

What is a chemical change / reaction ? Chemical changes = the restructuring of chemical energy bonds holding matter together. $ & # % # % $ Reaction & +

A chemical equation shows the reactants and the products of a chemical reaction. The formulas/symbols of the reactants are written on the left, followed by an arrow (showing a chemical change took place) and the products are written on the right. 6 CO H 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2

Reactants CO 2 H 2 O Products O 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 Photosynthesis

Radiant Energy of the Sun Stored Chemical Energy of Food! Were matter or energy created or destroyed during photosynthesis? NO…they were transformed!

Who Photosynthesizes ? Algae Phytoplankton
