Bade-bade shehron mein chhoti- chhoti baatein

 “Materials, created by the natives, for the natives”.  This is the widely accepted definition of the Authentic Materials. Some points may be debatable about it, such as ‘should editing be permissible, if ‘yes’, to what extent, when and why etc.  Let’s not get into the details of this discussion, and move on to the points of ‘Validity of use of the Authentic Materials:

 They stimulate the students’ initial interest.  Motivate learners to communicate, because they help make communication ‘real and natural’.  Constantly engage students.  Less dependence on acquiring textual knowledge.  Attitude towards global understanding.  Less dependence on dictionary/word meaning for comprehension.  Exposure to learning the language in real life situation.  Guessing and predicting is a part of AM, which is a part of the natural process of learning.

 Patience : to understand the complexity and ambiguity of the target language.  Habit of predicting/guessing: Majority of researchers agree that AM should be introduced at the beginning level of instructions. The risk is only that they might get lost, confused or even frustrated to a certain level, however the advantage will be that they will develop the habit of dealing with the unfamiliar reading and listening of socio-cultural learning materials.

 From Literal to Global: with their habit of guessing and predicting, they come to understand the global meaning of the materials they are dealing with. This practice brings about a change in their attitude. This aspect is very crucial in the overall learning process.  Direct contact with a reality level of the language: Authentic materials bring learners into direct contact with a reality level of the language.

 Copy right issue  Level of the learners/Relevance  Specific objective of learning( listening and Speaking skills)  Availability of Authentic Materials  Up-to-date
