 Scientists classify animals based on features they share.  Features include coloring, type of teeth, and number of legs.  One feature scientists use to classify animals is whether or not the animal has a backbone.

Birds,

Those with BackbonesThose without Backbones

 Animals without a Backbone  Animals without Backbones are called Inverteb rates  Multicellular, no cell walls, reproduce sexuall y, heterotrophic.

 Sponges, Anemones and Jellyfish, Worms,  Snails, Clams and Octopuses,  Starfish and Urchins, Insects,  Spiders, Ticks, Lobsters,  Crabs, and Crayfish are all invertebrates

 Animals with a Backbone  Animals with Backbones are called Vertebrates

 Vertebrates Well-developed internal skeleton, highly developed brain; have advanced nervous system, outer covering of protective cellular skin.

Scientists divide vertebrates into five main groups.  fish  Birds  Amphibians  Reptiles  Mammals are all Vertebrates

 Are cold-blooded  Have gills and scales  Live in water  Have a Backbone

 Have feathers  Are warm-blooded  Have hollow bones and most can fly  Lay eggs  Have a Backbone

 Have scales  Live on land  Are cold-blooded  Usually lay eggs  Have a Backbone

 Live in water and on land  Are cold blooded  Have smooth skin  Lay eggs  Have a Backbone

 Have hair or fur  Are warm-blooded  Feed milk to their young  Bear live young (except monotremes)  Have a Backbone
