Environment Challenge 9 & 10 March Kingfisher project Help improve this area for the local community

Kingfisher Project Cole Valley Runs between Small Heath and Shard End Birmingham, a distance of 7 miles This corridor is much valued for recreation and wildlife but with much potential for improvement A green space running through an urbanised and industrial part of Birmingham. The Kingfisher ranger service would like help to make this resource more welcoming to visitors

The difference we will make If you decide to get involved with this challenge you could be enhancing part of this site by: Removing rubbish and litter Constructing and placing benches and litter bins Planting a hedge Trees have grown dense by the walkway and local people are concerned that they may conceal undesirable people especially after dark By thinning the trees this area will be made safer and more enjoyable

Preparation and training The challenge will be hosted by CSV Environment who will go through Health & Safety and Risk Assessment with all volunteers They will provide and train us how to use the tools, to plant hedging, construct benches and thin the trees Lunch will be provided by the Bangladeshi Women’s Resource Centre caterers There will be shelter, toilet facilities & first aid kits on site Transport will be provided to and from campus

Could you please wear Protective boots or wellingtons Waterproofs Comfortable warm clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy CSV Environment can provide a limited amount of footwear if you do not have anything suitable

The end result There was excellent feedback from staff from Novembers environment challenge at a youth inclusion project in Ward End Park: “I most enjoyed seeing the visible improvement in the local community at the end of the challenge” “It was interesting to work with staff from other departments and find out what they do” “I liked learning new skills and being in the fresh air” “The physical work was good fun” Aston staff and students transform The Base – youth inclusion project
