WRITING A STORY

ORGANIZING IDEAS When writing a story, you should organize your ideas into paragraphsthis heps you to create a logical structure and guides the reader through the story

CHARACTERISTIC OF A STORY A GOOD STORY: TELLS THE EVENTS CLEARLY HAS A BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND END IS INTERESTING TO READ

PLAN Write the title of your story INTRODUCTION (Paragraph 1) Setting the scene (people involved, time, place) Catching the reader´s attention Addressing the reader directly Asking a rhetorical question (no answer is expected) Use your senses to make the description more lively.

PLAN MAIN BODY (Paragraphs 2-3) – telling the story What happens first? What happens next? What´s the climax event?

PLAN CONCLUSION (Paragraph 4) Referring to the characters´feelings, comments, reactions or consequences What happens in the end? How do the characters feel?

VOCABULARY TO MAKE THE STORY MORE INTERESTING, YOU SHOULD USE: Variety of adjectives / adverbs which will make the story more interesting and exciting to read Present participles (-ing) Past participles (- ed) You can describe what you see (a huge snake), hear (hissing), feel (soft forest floor) or smell (the scent of pine trees) Variety of verbs which will make the story more lively

VERBS When writing a story, you should present the events in the order they happened the reader can follow the story easily Use a mixture of direct speech and reported speech to make the story more interesting Use Past Continuous, Past Simple, and Past perfect tenses

TENSES USE OF TENSES: Past Continuous is used to set the scene (e.g. It was raining hard and the wind was blowing as he drove towards his parents´ house) Past Simple is used to describe the events of the story (e.g. He got out of his car, opened the gate and went through the garden towards the front door.) Past Perfect is used to give the background of the story (e.g. He had planned to visit his parents a long time before.)

DEVELOPING THE STORY You should develop the story in chronological order by narrating the events that happen before the main (the most important) event, then describe the event itself The sequence of tenses is important. Use time words such as: at first, then, before, until, while, during, after, finally End the story by referring to people´s feelings, comments or the consequences

SEQUENCING WORDS Use sequencing (time) words: at first, then, while, suddenly, after, before, finally, that evening, by then, an hour later, in a few minutes, as soon as, eventually

REVISION Match the statements TRUE or FALSE. A story cannot begin with direct speech. Time words shouldn´t be used in stories. Stories should not combine description and narration. You should avoid using the senses to set the scene. Paragraph planning is important. Sequence of events is not important in stories. When telling a story, you can move back in time.
