For your Individual ‘Product research’ you should select one of the 7 project themes from above and then produce a maximum of 3 pages of research into existing products that fit into that category. Your research should give pictures of ‘Existing products’, explanations on what they are made from, what features are on the product (LED’s/ switches / displays, etc), cost, how it works, how it is made. Try and include some ‘electronic kits’ in your research. IMPORTANT!!!!! You must evaluate each of the products that you research and explain what YOU think about the product and explain how you could influence your product from it Water leak Alarm Room Temperature Alarm ‘Where am I?’ / Information Map Operation

REMEMBER!!!! You only have 45 hours To fully investigate, design, Manufacture and Evaluate your product Analysis of the Task Your Task… Once you have chosen your task you must include the following to explain why and what you are doing….. Problem / Situation Why is there a need for your product? Is it to protect something? Is it to have fun ? Is it to learn something ? Explain the context of you product (where it happens / will be used) Project Brief Explain what you are going to make that will solve the problem / situation. You do not have to go into too much detail. Keep it simple but make sure the moderator will know what you are making. Target Market You must also explain who the project is aimed at (is it teenagers / family / men / women / shed owners/ sport players/ athletes ). You may have a range of people who will use the product. Constraints You only have 45 hours to make the project. Explain that you will have to make sure that you complete the project in time. Also you should explain that you will be making the project in school and will be supervised throughout to make sure that YOU have done the work.

REMEMBER!!!! You only have 45 hours To fully investigate, design, Manufacture and Evaluate your product Design Criteria Your Task… You must produce a design criteria for your chosen electronic product. (Bullet point list – Approx 1 full page) This is similar to a ‘shopping list’ including all the features that your product will include. REMEMBER……………..YOU MUST EVALUATE YOUR FINAL PRODUCT AGAINST THIS LIST!!! You should probably divide the design criteria into the following:- General Criteria What will be the function of the product? What features will it have? How will you interact with the product (switch it on/off) / activate the product (Push switch/ sensor)? Electronics Criteria What power supply will be used (6 volt battery pack/ 9 volt battery/ 3 volt battery pack), What type of Integrated circuits will you be using (555 timer / PIC microcontroller/ 4017 decade counter / 4026 (7 segment decoder). What type of switches (toggle/ push/ microswitch), sensors (light / heat) / components will be used (transistor for powering a speaker / siren. LED’s / 7 segment display. What method will you be using to manufacture your circuit (Printed Circuit Board method) Case Criteria What type of material will you be using (PVC, Acrylic, MDF), what machines will you be using (vacuum former / laser cutter). How will you secure the circuit board in place / battery in place / wires in place? How will you make sure it is safe to be used by your target market (user) – No sharp corners / small parts, etc
