ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM  ISO 14001:2004  Waste Management  Resource Conservation

OBJECTIVES To Conserve Resources and Minimize Waste. To Identify wastes being produced in the office and find ways to reduce the identified sources of wastes. To create an EMS program that can be applied specifically for the Company.

Definition of Environment  Surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelation.”  ISO Definition

Environmental Management System is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. is a framework that helps a company achieve its environmental goals through consistent control of its operations.  Environmental Protection Agency (USA)

What Concerns Environmentalists? Global Warming Acid Rain Deforestation Large Scale Loss of Species Pollution Resource Depletion

History 18 th -19 th Century – Industrial Revolution, lack of standards for industrial products and process. 1970’s – Pollution Control Initiated. 1980’s – Recycling, Pollution Prevention 1990’s – Global Treaties, ISO 14001:1996 was created. 2000’s – Conservation/Sustainability/ Revision of ISO (2004)

ISO 14001:2004 EMS - Specification with Guidance for Use

ISO Series Is a set of standards related to environmental management that help organizations to minimize how the operations negatively affect the environment and comply with applicable laws and other environmentally oriented requirements.

ISO Objectives Reduce Waste and Resource Depletion Reduce or Eliminate release of Pollutants to Environment Product Design to Reduce Environmental Impact in Production, Use and Disposal Promote Awareness among Employees and Community

ISO PRINCIPLES Principle 1 - Commitment and Policy êAn organization should define its environmental policy and ensure commitment to its Environmental Management System. Principle 2 - Planning êAn organization should formulate a plan to fulfill its environmental policy. Principle 3 - Implementation êFor effective implementation an organization should develop the capabilities and support mechanisms necessary to achieve its environmental policies, objectives and targets.

ISO PRINCIPLES Principle 4 - Measurement and Evaluation êAn organization should measure, monitor and evaluate its environmental performance. Principle 5 - Review and Improvement êAn organization should review and continually improve its environmental management system, with the object of improving its overall environmental performance.

Management Program  Program shall include: Responsibility for achieving objectives and targets at each function and level Means of achieving objectives and targets Time-frame Develop and modify activities, products or services

WASTE MANAGEMENT and RESOURCE CONSERVATION

Environmental Management System Model EMS is a process of continual improvement in which an organization is constantly reviewing and revising the system

WASTE MANAGEMENT is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources.

Definition of Terms Waste “substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of the law”. Disposal “any operation which may lead to resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses”.

Waste Hierarchy Reduce Reuse Recycle

Reduce Also known as waste minimization. To buy less and use less. To lessen the amount of resources used and lessen the amount of waste produced.

Reuse elements of the discarded item are used again. Counterpart of disposable products.

Recycle Process where discards are separated into materials that may be incorporated into new products. is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials.

Resource Development

Yokohama Tire Philippines, through composting, has reduced expenses on waste. It requires employees to surrender empty cartridges, boxes and even pens before they get a fresh batch. –Before, it spent P300,000 to papy haulers to dispose of waste. Today, it spends just P300 on the composting agent. Smart Communications recycle the 4 tons of tarpaulins it uses for advertizing and publicity. Gawad Kalinga communities turn the tarpaulins into bags.

Resource Development Banco de Oro reduced energy consumption by 90 percent in its illuminated signage in 70 branches – simply by using LED lights instead of the conventional fluorescent bulbs. SM encourages Green Bags to reduce plastic shopping bags and its solid waste management program has reduced the volume of soil waste; for every truckload of garbage, 80 percent are recyclable.

Resource Development At the Bayer Cropscience Plant, less than 1 percent is non- recyclable. Scrap metals are re-used and re-fabricated as sun-dryers, glove stands and clotheslines for factory suits. Fiber drums are stylized and made into street signs, furniture for receiving areas and plant pots. United Pulp and Paper Company, which uses 100-percent recycled paper, turns sludge, its main waste, into fiber and boiler fuel, saving on energy cost.
