Slide 6 Why study Community Development in India?  India is huge, bustling and diverse  Population of ~1.2b – one sixth of the world  2,000+ ethnic groups, 2 official languages, but 21 other recognised regional languages  Every major religion represented, Ingrained caste system  Economy today 12th largest economy (by nominal value) 2nd fastest growing major economy By 2020, India will be among the leading economies  Reality today Largest concentration of poor people in the world ~46% children under 3 have suffered malnutrition

Slide 17 Take home/workplace messages DELE experience very positive and inspirational Community development is procedural but there is not set “recipe” Actions Reflections Work with (not for) the community and “Responding to the response” (Every answer is a information) Management of different perceptions in community is hard The existing capacity of people and their community need to be recognised (Always do Resource analysis) Participation from the community is the key as opposed to the service delivery efforts.
