THE NILE RIVER 6650 kilometers long (26 Kuwait's) Flowing from Uganda and Ethiopia into Sudan and Egypt 40 million people live near the Nile Delta (where Nile drains into the Mediterranean) Aswan High Dam – holds flood waters releasing them when needed (for what?) Silt: sediment/minerals left on land after water floods creates nutrient soil – beneficial for farming.

SUNDAY 2/28– RIVERS Nile River: Longest river in the world. 95% of Egypt’s population depend on for water. **Population density along river: 3,320 people/sq. mile **Population density in the rest of Egypt: 177 people/sq. mile Many rivers not useful because of rapids, waterfalls, and gorges. **Congo River has 32 waterfalls.

THE NILE RIVER – GROUP WORK 1) Explain how the geography in Egypt has impacted the lifestyles of people. Use examples from the video clip. (It can be current or ancient). 2) Why is the Nile essential (important) to Abdulla and his family? Explain. 3) What would happen to the lifestyles of Egyptians if the Nile’s water supply is cut off because of dams built in Ethiopia? 4) How did the floods of the Nile lead to great success for the people of ancient Egypt? How has this changed since ancient times? 5) How has geography led to the success of countries along the Nile?
